Come to think of it, when my Mentor offered me HIS recipe for success, I was quite astonished.
This guy, an undoubtedly successful entrepreneur responsible for the launch of several 7-digit online businesses, had just called me out on the main differences between ME and successful leaders like HIM.
It was not the realization that he, like many similar people who managed to build their success from nothing, was several levels above me (that’s why I was having HIM as a mentor in the first place!): I had almost already accepted the fact that this was a law of Nature I couldn’t possibly defy…
What hit me like a punch in the face was the sheer truth that I was not willing to tell myself.
The reason why I have not been succeeding at my goals, despite all the time, effort and money invested, with long hours over-night and weekends, was NOT because of something I was doing.
It was due to things I was NOT doing.
When I was asked
“Luca, why do you think you deserve to be successful like a successful Leader if you’re not willing to do what successful Leaders do?”
the simple truth of this false-question silenced me on the spot. I immediately felt like naked, probably blushed like a kid who’s caught stealing cake and got me angry at him for calling me out and, most of all, at myself.
I got myself a number of excuses not to be on par with those who I was measuring myself with, and yet I wanted the results they had.
How ridiculous and naive was I being?
“…I am going to make you an offer…” my Mentor has kept on going without waiting for my reply
“I will now tell you EXACTLY what you need to do to be successful“, I was feeling almost high, my head buzzing like I had too much alcohol
“...and you will do EXACTLY as I tell you, each day for the next 30 days. AND if you are not getting out of this a much better Leader than you are, and reaping the results thereof, THEN and only then, you can come back to me saying that you have failed. Do you accept?”
I remember that I simply nodded, aware all of a sudden that if I wanted to reach the results that successful Leaders achieve, I needed to be ready to do what the successful Leaders do.
“So here’s the 5 things successful Leaders do every day of their life, no breaks, no excuses”
And here I report them to you exactly as they were given to me in that conversation.
- Visualize and meditate daily on your personal goals
- Focus on value generating activities
- Invest in yourself and share
- Mastermind with other leaders
- What you learn today, DO today and teach somebody else
Let’s go with order.
1. Visualize and meditate daily on your personal goals
If there is one truth about us human beings is that we are made of more than ‘physical’ matter – we are SPIRITUAL beings.
Each of us, every single day, has the opportunity to discover this one simple truth and to realize how POWERFUL our mind is, for the good and for the bad.
One of my favorite quotes is from Henry Ford:
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.”, Henry Ford
This is like saying that you can make everything you make come true so, be very careful what you wish for… because you may actually get it!
This is not just a hippy mantra, the MOST SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET train themselves on positive thinking and on focusing on their end goal DAILY, from the most successful entrepreneurs to the most successful athletes and sportspeople.
Therefore, it is just obvious that FOCUSING on your destination is going to automagically steer your path in the right direction.
2. Focus on value-generating activities
If you are NOT focusing on what is bringing VALUE to you and, most importantly, to those around you, you are NOT making a difference, full stop.
It is only through what makes other people and yourself grow that you are going to reach a destination.
Or, in other terms, if you had to walk 100 miles to reach your destination, would you focus on programming your PVR? You could, and that wouldn’t take you an inch closer to where you need to be.
3. Invest in yourself and share
This is definitely one of the easiest (yes, EASIEST) value-generating activities we all can undertake starting NOW.
Pick a book, research articles, attend webinars or physical sessions. Just go out there and do something to better yourself.
Getting yourself to a higher level will NOT be enough to make you a better Leader, though – you need to be sure you can share your knowledge so that others can benefit.
4. Mastermind with other leaders
I am sure you have heard this before, but I do really see a lot of value in repeating this statement:
“We become the combined average of the FIVE people we associate with most.”
The expression ‘Circle of Influence’ refers to the immediate relationships (i.e. PEOPLE!) that are directly influencing your life.
In other words, if you are looking to grow (in any respect) you need to seek out the company, guidance and example (motivation is a key factor) of the people you can learn something from.
If you still need to resonate with this let me ask you this: if you were to launch a new innovative and disruptive product in the market (any), would you seek the company of tea lovers or of entrepreneurs and start-up CEOs? (nothing against tea!)
And, last but not least… let the drums roll…
5. What you learn today DO today and teach somebody else
The knowledge that will take you from your point A (where you are now) to point B (where you need and WANT to be, your destination) is only as good as how you will be able to apply it.
DOING is the perfect way to REALLY learn something and being able to TEACH it to somebody else is the highest form of learning, because you are essentially reproducing that knowledge, making it yours and offering to someone else.
Still working on ALL this points but you know what?
I am finding it easier and easier every day.
My advice: start with number 1.
Having a clear picture of your destination will remind you WHY you are after that something and will constantly focus your efforts.
Start your day and end your day with this small visualization exercise (I do it while in bed)
Picture your IDEAL DAY and take a moment to reflect on how each of your senses reacts. Most importantly, record how that has made you FEEL.
If you get this right, you will BOOSTED throughout the day and will keep going the next day, and the next, and the next… (you got the idea)… until you ARE ACTUALLY there.
Make sure this doesn’t take you more than 5 to 10 minutes, this is NOT about you daydreaming, but about you clearly giving yourself a direction 🙂
Let me know how you fare!
