Have you ever heard the expression ‘path of least resistance’?
It is normally associated with the physical properties that fluids present in their interaction with objects they come in contact with.
Take the example of a river flowing: swirls and currents, over the course of the years, shape the path of the river itself and are stronger of weaker in correspondence with rocks, shores, and other obstacles.
This is not a physics treaty, so you’ll excuse my superficial description of the phenomenon, but I do need to get this point across.
The water will normally flow, and hence currents and whirls will be created, following the path of least resistance that is where it encounters less friction and fewer obstacles to its flowing.
Generally speaking, the path with NO obstacles is the path a river flows along.
You got the point.
Exactly like the water flowing in a river, our life flows in space and time and, VERY generally speaking, the majority of us tends to follow the path of least resistance.
This is not to say that life is easy; it ain’t.
Instead, it shows like our brains, more or less consciously, take decisions that influence our overall path.
We need to take decisions every day and yet, we would rather not be confronted with any decision, because a decision means taking a stance, pondering the situation and the likely or possible outcomes… and then having to do something and actually have the concrete possibility that that was the wrong choice…
It looks terrible, doesn’t it!?
It would all be so much easier if there were NO obstacles along the way and if our path was just a straight line and not a series of curves and …
Let’s try to imagine now your life like a straight river, without obstacles, without curves, streaming seamlessly from its source to its destination.
Does it sound all-too-enticing now? Flowing from A to Z without an event, without a choice to make, without any control and without ever leaving a trace of our passage.
Luckily, life is full of… problems, yes 🙂 and full of decisions to be made.
There’s plenty of freedom to take a free choice even when we’re not confronted with a compelling decision to make.
This is what’s called free-will.
The worst thing you can do with it? It’s never to do ANYTHING with it.
By choosing the path of least resistance you are giving away any form of control of your existence, including where you well end up being.
Except that we all know where we are going as a final destination of our journey: we all share that, and although it may be painful for some to think of it… it is rather true.
By accepting that we all are going to die, then we accept that we already NOW do not have ANYTHING to lose.
‘We are all already naked’, said Steve Jobs, CEO and co-founder of Apple and Pixar in his renown, powerful Commencement speech at Stanford in 2005.
Listen to it again here below.
If fear, because fear it is for most of us, is preventing us from taking any decision or taking any action towards achieving a goal and leaving a mark behind us, then we shall realize that there is really nothing we should be afraid of.
Except for fear itself, and the predictability our life if we choose NOT to take any decision or any action, exactly like a river, flowing straight and without any event from our origin to our destination.
I don’t know about you, but this thought is what keeps me awake at night and what makes my veins tremble in my pulses.
The thought that I will (relatively soon) be nothing and that what I will leave behind will be nothing.
The thought that I may be wasting my life away by living someone else’s existence, by not making the things that make me happy.
The thought that I have spent my life doing the wrong things and without a meaning.
I refuse the opinion that I am here now, and will soon be gone, wasting this great gift that I have been given and that you have been given as well: life.
If you think of it, next to Life, Death is the greatest invention of all, for Death allows the old to make space for the new.
You may represent the ‘New’ now… but quite soon you will become the ‘Old’ that needs to make way to the ‘New’.
You were not made to break even.
You were not made to take the path of least resistance in your life.
You were made to fight.
You were made to experiment new things, and fail and learn from them and build something that no one had done before.
If you can dream it, you can realize it.
If you choose the path of least resistance, you will keep having dreams without realizing them.
Do not necessarily look for a pattern when you are starting off new things.
Have a strong vision, but realize that it is only later in life that you will be able to connect all the dots and see the pattern.
Have trust that there is a pattern and that all the points will come together.
