If you had access (in the form of mentorship, for example) to a very successful person in your field and you know that person could help you bring tremendous positive change in your life, what would you ask her/him to do for you?
Ponder carefully and you’ll see where I am going with this.
I want you to challenge yourself here and do a bit of roleplay.
If ‘I’ was that person, what would you ask me?
Mmm, believe not. You are not that kind of person.
How do I know? Because you are reading this article, because you are probably following me and it is likely that you are a member of my newsletter, therefore I KNOW what kind of people are on board: and this is NOT the kind of people that will ask others to solve their problems.
Money is the outcome, NOT the solution to the problems.
But let’s assume for a second that you were in the long tail of people outside of the 99% and you were indeed asking me for money, here’s the answer that I (and most probably anyone else) will give you
‘My friend, if this is your problem, then you don’t need a mentor, you need a bank…’
But let’s assume for another minute that I was for any reason so moved and decided to help you by giving you what you ask ‘some money’. What do you think would happen not long after that?
With a very high probability, that you would get back to me asking for more money.
At that point, do you think you would get that money from me? Exactly!
You would be the live demonstration that money per se is NOT the solution.
More than that, you would come across as desperate, inconsequent and not reliable.
I would still like you though :-))) but wouldn’t give you any more money.
Believe it or not, this is the kind of request that more often than not I hear from people coming to me, at least the people that do not have the right mindset, the people outside SFM.
Another typical request?
‘Show me what you did that made you so successful!’
While this is naturally an obvious question, and definitely more appropriate that just asking for money, this question still misses the point. Let me explain.
Let’s take Steve Jobs, as he’s undoubtedly one of the most successful people we all know and let’s assume that you had minute by minute recording of EVERYTHING that he did to achieve what he achieved in his life and that you could faster forward to 10x the speed to condense your learning time and that you could go back at any point in time.
Let’s even say that you had a full diary with detailed explanations of what he did day in day out to reach success.
Would you agree with me that with all that you would really have a genuine manual for success?
Yes, I agree as well.
Point is, that you would have a 100% effective manual for success, that works for Steve Jobs.
Let me be even more explicit using another example: weight loss.
Everyone know the 2 secrets behind losing weight: diet and exercise.
And yet, a great number of people suffer from obesity and struggle with achieving a clear success by losing weight.
These 2 examples should make you understand that if ‘How To’ information was all we needed to be successful, we would all be millionaires! We would all be successful people because we all have, I am sure, a pile of manuals on how to do stuff.
So, what’s the trick?
That there is no trick.
People look at success, in any form, as a sort of magic bullet, without realizing that it is the carefully cultivated outcome of people who have not only worked hard to achieve it but that even more importantly had the vision to sustain it.
I am not talking about that very low number of people in the world that seem to get everything on a silver plate, I am talking about the regular guys like you and me.
So if you had access to a person who reached success on her or his own terms, that could help you achieve success, who would you go to?
You would go to those people who achieved success starting from the same position of life you are starting at now because they have been there and they did it.
They are the living proof that what you dream of is realistic and utterly possible.
So what would you need to ask them to ensure that they can help you be successful?
I’ll tell you drawing from my own experience as both a mentee and as a mentor.
Not too long ago, I was still struggling to make my first sale online; I was putting in the effort, every day and kept building my work with abnegation and faith and I managed to attract quite a number of leads to my list and also other new digital marketers like me made me all sort of compliments with the work I was doing… but still 0/Zero/Nichts/Null sales.
So in one of our weekly Skype calls, my mentor asked me ‘Luca, what can I do for you? How can I help you reach your objectives?’
I hesitated for a few seconds because there were so many things that were coming to my mind at that moment that I thought I needed help with… but I could ultimately ask for that one thing, so it’d better be important and I answered
‘Help me make my first sale’
His reply was ‘Ok’
I was not really sure what had happened there, but I knew that that was what I needed the most at that time: to make my first sale.
I didn’t’ ask him to give me money to increase my advertising budget, nor did I ask him to purchase my product and be my first sale!
What he did instead, was something I would have never thought about.
During one live event in Toronto, Canada, that I could not attend in person, he sent me a message with a picture of himself just landed in Canada and asked me ‘Photoshop yourself next to me’.
I was not sure what he meant nor what the goal was (plus it was 10 pm my time in Switzerland), but I fired up my laptop, scanned through my pictures and after 30 minutes I had a rough photoshop job done, showing my head next to him in that picture… (this below is the actual picture I sent him!)
After 10 minutes of sending to him, he took that picture and posted it on his social media accounts with the simple words ‘My friend Luca and I are in Toronto!’
His connections and my connections started engaging with his post and this ended up being, for me, one of the most significant posts I ever had to deal with on social media.
People started commenting and engaging with that simple piece of content.
After 2 days, I had my first sale and I totally owed it to that simple post.
Sales just naturally started popping up after that like in a domino effect.
You see, what that simple action from my mentor had done for me was NOT helping me sell my products, it had helped me sell myself.
The number one reason people, in general, fail at selling, is because they get somewhat too attached to their products and get quite monotonous at saying ‘I have the coolest product, it is soo cool, it is so much better than all the others…’ forgetting one thing: that people do not care about their product.
People care about their own issues and how YOU can help them solve their issues.
That social media post from my mentor helped me do just that: it boosted my image as a trusted individual who has the right connections and who has got what it takes to help others.
It helped me reshape a message about myself and my products that I would not have been able to do alone.
If I had asked my mentor to show me how HE did achieve success, I would just have had another How-To script that would be gathering dust somewhere in one of the many scaffolds.
So what should YOU ask your mentors to help you with?
First of all, be honest with yourself, and with them: what is the one single thing that you are struggling with obtaining results at the moment?
Is it getting in touch with the right people? Is it getting leads? Is it setting up your marketing funnel? Is it making your first sale like it was for me?
Be clear and be specific.
As a mentor myself I can tell you that the thing I do not only get frustrated with but also feel somewhat impotent at is when I hear from the people ‘I want you to help me become successful!’
Usually, I reply by asking back ‘Ok, and how exactly do you expect me to do that?’
Almost invariably the answer is ‘well, you’re the mentor, you should know!’
The truth is that a mentor will tell you things that you already know because, frankly speaking, there is no SECRET to success!
What works for me, or what has already worked for me, may not be working for you.
A mentor (a good mentor) knows this and won’t pretend to possess arcane knowledge that, simply, does not exist.
All those promising quick results, secrets to well-preserved knowledge, those are the people you should beware of, those are the people you should NOT listen to.
And then WHY the heck are there so many people out there promising quick results in no time? Because not knowing any better, the average Joe would fall for that.
See, we can believe anything we want to believe.
And we can be made to believe anything we want to believe.
The weak-minded people will always believe that their life is dominated by forces they cannot influence and that those who have been blessed with success have been invested by some Godly gift.
Those who know where the truth is, on the other hand, are aware of the power of Choice vs Chance.
They know that they already have what it takes to reap success and that it may be a matter of working more or in a smarter way before reaching their goals.
They also know that a good mentor won’t try to cheat you giving you images of false prosperity without you first realizing that you need to follow a vision for yourself.
How many of the 9 to 5’ers and beyond today do NOT have a vision for their own life; how many of them won’t admit to being the main responsible for where they are in their life today; how many of these would fall back and say to themselves ‘I can’t’ ‘it’s impossible’ ‘it is not meant for me’.
I have been having similar thoughts in the past when all my existence seemed to dominated by forces I couldn’t contrast, and the more I convinced myself of this, the more I deprived myself of the only real weapon we all have: the power of my own choice.
A good mentor will not tell you what you want to hear; s/he will tell you what you need to hear.
It wasn’t until my mentor made me realize that I was already empowered to do what it needed to be done to become successful that I started taking action, one step at a time, based on easy, simple steps that built my daily, weekly, then monthly and yearly plan.
We may not always control the outcomes of our actions, but we do have full control over our own actions, to refine our plans or patch up a couple of bruises along the way.
Getting a mentor has been the best decision I could ever take for myself.
